Conclusions

Throughout the development of this project, I have been faced with a paradox - the very things I love most about modern dance prevent its easy adaptation to written language. Its complexity, its unpredictability, its ability to change meaning with each viewing; all of these aspects work against a static language. My personal view is that new technology can be used to more easily develop a rudimentary language for modern dance. Through a combination of terms and “definitions” in the form of videos, a modern dictionary could be created that would act as a shared point of reference for both choreographers and dancers. This would help to streamline the transmission and teaching of modern choreography, while still allowing choreographers to experiment within the composition of the steps. Hopefully, this or another method of transmission will soon arise - allowing the beauty and intricacies of modern dance to be preserved for coming generations of dancers.
