A special collection: Latinx feminism

The subject of my special collection would be “Latina Feminism”, and it would contain papers, transcripts, and other works of literature that are important to the Latina feminist movement. Being that my chosen text consists of draft notes for a book that was so integral to the women’s liberation movement and later translated into Spanish, this collection would contain works, written in both Spanish and English, by those who have contributed to this movement. Bringing these materials together in one place would help us understand a movement that is very much still in progress, and one that is generally quite young as compared to other civil rights movements. I believe that this collection would be unique due to the intersectionality of the subject matter, as it is generally easier to find notable feminist literature written by white women, who do not have the same experiences as women of color. I could not find a book fund that is particularly geared toward feminist literature, but I am sure with more research I could find appropriate funding. The collection would serve to bring attention to their unique plight and to give the microphone to these largely unsung heroines who are doing amazing activist work for their community. Furthermore, it would give scholars and activists alike the opportunity to study how this movement has evolved, and to better understand what work still needs to be done. For those studying public health, such as myself, this collection would also help us better understand the needs of this specific population in terms of health and wellbeing.
