To respond to Gabby's comment, I have found a recipe for the ink.

This letter would have been written on the standard paper at the time. One, when writing a letter, could take a large sheet of paper and fold it in half such that one column fills each half. In this way, there would still be enough space to fold the paper into an envelope and still be able to write a significant amount (even with the cross-writing occuring).
