Title A name given to the resource Once in a Lifetime: A Transcription of a Conversation Recounting Brian Golemme’s Personal Experience on a Jury (Annotated) Subject The topic of the resource Jury Experience Account Description An account of the resource A transcript of an interview of Brian Golemme detailing his personal experience serving on a Massachusetts jury trial on September 19, 2019. The story was preserved for the interesting and odd particulars of the case and to capture the full depth of Mr. Golemme’s experience and feelings during the event. Upon hearing the story for the first time on September 26, 2019, Brian’s son, Ryan Golemme, felt the event was worth keeping around for both personal enjoyment but also as a story that could be retold and passed down to others to capture the experience of such a unique case. The interview was conducted on October 5, 2019 and recorded, from which a transcript was made. The edition of the text also contains an introductory preface from Ryan and annotations of the transcript. The transcript details Brian’s recounting of the jury experience. He initially thought it would be a rote civil trial. The case dealt with a man who was charged with violating a restraining order, forcibly confronting a woman at a gas station, and driving to her friend’s house and hitting her. However, there were several details that quickly complicated the case, including the lack of a police report, details of the defendant having a twin brother and a different brother whom the woman also dated, unreliable testimony from the defendant and the woman, and numerous other issues that made the case complicated to decide. The story also recounts the experience in jury deliberations, where the group came down to charging the restraining order violation but not the assault after intense discussion. The text was transcribed from the interview and preserved as a digital file. A personal copy was printed and preserved for internal use within the Golemme family. Title A name given to the resource Paper Girls Description An account of the resource This is the first issue of Paper Girls, a serialized graphic novel written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang, and colored by Matt Wilson. The series (which ran for 30 Issues from 2015 to 2019) follows a group of teen newspaper delivery girls from 1988 as they navigate an intergenerational war. As of 2019, the series was diffused in many ways. First, over 4 years Image Comics released each issue as a 130 (approx.) paperback with glossy pages for $9.99. Since the series’ completion, bound (hardcover) copies with multiple issues available. Due to the price of the physical comics and the lack of easy-to-find PDFs online, the audience is somewhat limited by socio-economic constraints. Still, the internet has given Paper Girls life outside physical issues. The series has many active Reddit threads and has inspired much fan art (often in the forms of more comics or in animated). Also, Amazon Studios is also developing the series into a TV show. The series itself contains many allusions to political tensions and tensions of the 1980s that comment on our current world. This issue includes both a subtle Reagan-Bush campaign sign and a plot that explores both the potential usefulness and dangers of guns. Further, the series both follows and critiques different tropes of the graphic novel genre’s canon. To an extent, the powerful group of girls mimics the crime-fighting units found in places like DC Comics’ The Justice League, but the focus on the power of girls (especially in the issue’s early context of somewhat sexist bullies) bucks against the common notion that comic books are a boys’ pastime. Also, as a review in ImagineFx explains, one of the alien races speaks a dialect that is a mix of Shakesperean-influenced grammar structures and diction and Nadsat, a fictional dialect from Burgess’ 1962 Clockwork Orange. The same review also explains Chiang’s and Wilson’s homages to various movies from the 1980s and how their bright, contrasting colors and clear lines envoke scenes from moves like ET and Flight of the Navigator. Overall, Paper Girls not only is an artful graphic novel, but a brilliant cultural relic that reveals much about how the world in 2019 is interpreted through a variety of mediums and with a complete analysis we can begin to see how the worlds of film, comics, literature, history, and digital media interact to inform the 2019 reader. Yeats Subject The topic of the resource Poetry Recitation Description An account of the resource This is a three and a half minute BBC radio broadcast of William Butler Yeats's own voice in 1932 reciting two of his poems, one of which is the most famous of his early poetry, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" (1888). Yeats prefaces this poetry recitation with an explanation of how he was inspired to write "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" and why he will try to recite it in a musical or performative way. "I’m going to read my poems with great emphasis upon their rhythm," he says, "...and that is why I will not read them as if they were prose." Yeats wrote "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" in 1888 when he was twenty-three years old. He made ten radio broadcasts recordings of his poetry, most including "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," with the BBC between 1931 (at the age of sixty-six) and 1937 (at the age of seventy-two). He died in 1939 (at the age of seventy-three).
